My 2019 pizza wish list

At the end of 2018, in my 8 Pizzas That Haunt My Dreams post, I mentioned some of the places I wanted to visit in 2019. I figured I should just jot them down here for posterity—and as a nudge to myself. We’ll see how many I can manage. With a full-time non-pizza job, a family, and the occasional pop-up, I don’t get out as much as I’d like. In no particular order…

  • Razza: Dan Richer’s super-acclaimed pizzeria in Jersey City, New Jersey
  • Norma’s Pizza at Root’s Country Market: Longtime Pizzamaking.com and Slice blog community member Norma Knepp’s pizza stand that’s open on Tuesdays only
  • Pizzeria Beddia: Its original incarnation closed before I could get to it, but he’s reopening a larger version soonish. Philadelphia
  • Paulie Gee’s Slice Shop: I’ve been a couple times, but now I’ve gotta get back for the square pie. Greenpoint, Brooklyn
  • Violet: Matt & Emily Hyland’s new Rhode Island–inspired restaurant serves grilled pizza, of course—as an homage to Providence’s legendary Al Forno, which invented the style
  • Pizza Moto: They started as a mobile operation at the Brooklyn Flea and have had a brick-and-mortar for a few years now. Shameful that I haven’t been. It looks so cute! Red Hook, Brooklyn
  • Speedy Romeo LES Stilleto’s slice nights: Lower East Side, NYC. They recently started doing a late-night slice “pop-up” in their own restaurant. (Normally they’re ~12″ whole pies, but this looks to be next-level NY-style)
  • Lynwood Cafe: Randolph, Massachusetts. One of the grandaddies of South Shore bar-style
  • Pizza Gutt, Philadelphia. He makes phenomenal-looking squares
  • Ops: Bushwick, Brooklyn. I’ve been once, but it was on one of the coldest days of 2017 (December 31), and since they do ambient-temperature dough fermentation, the cold was messing with them
  • Archie’s Bar & Pizza: Bushwick, Brooklyn. Looks like a cute place with “comfort” pizza, if that makes sense
  • Made in NY: A controversial spin-off of Prince Street Pizza
  • Wheated: I’ve been before, but it’s been too long. One of the few pizzerias in NYC doing a naturally leavened crust
  • Zuppardi’s Apizza: Can you believe I’ve never been? I almost never recommend a place if I haven’t been, but I keep sending people to Zuppardi’s over and over based on the raves I’ve gotten from trusted pizza heads. Every time I recommend it without having visited, though, I die a little inside
  • King Umberto: Elmont, NY. Grandma pizza here is supposed to be phenomenal
  • Daddy Greens: Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn. Recommended by @munnygrip
  • Rosie’s: Point Pleasant Beach, NJ. Comes highly recommended by Lou Tomczak, and their Instagram looks amazing
